Coryphantha durangensis, synonymous with Mammillaria durangensis, is a member of the genus Coryphantha. There are many members of this genus of "beehive" cacti, which are native to arid regions of Mexico, central and North America.

Coryphantha cacti have features that distinguish it from other cacti. Differences include:

    - Their bodies have no ribs, just tubercles

    - They flower from the top growing end of the stem

    - The tip of each flowering tubercle features three parts, and the groove part of the tubercle is what distinguishes a Coryphantha

    - Their seed coat has a net-like pattern

Coryphantha, more than other cacti, tend to change their appearance as they age. In fact, the prescense or absence of a central spine is not "indicitive of the genus".

Fun Fact: Before the name "Coryphantha" was applied in 1856 by George Engelmann, all Coryphantha were classified as Mammillaria.
