Ferecactus chrysacanthus (commonly referred to as Cedros barrel cactus) is a rarer specimen of cactus, and is currently listed as endangered in the wild.

The plant can grow up to a meter tall, and the spines can range in color from white, red, yellow, or even gray. Central spines occasionally grow in a hooked shape, and up to 5 cm in length!

When Ferocactus chrysacanthus blooms (around June/July), expect yellow to orange to red flowers that develop into yellow fruit!

Fun fact: a specimen of this plant was collected and described in 1894 from Cedros Island. It was later described by name as Echinocactus chrysacanthus by Charles Russel Orcutt in 1899, to then be re-classified as Ferocactus chrysacanthus but Nathaniel Britton and Joseph Rose in 1922! The name of 'chrysacanthus' translates to 'golden-yellow-spined'.
