Leuchtenbergia Principis (also known as the agave cactus or prism cactus) is a monogenetic species, meaning there is only one member of the genus! Its closest relatives are mmbers of ferocactus, and hybrids between the two have been produced.
This is a very unique and slow-growing species. It sprouts occasionally, and can reach heights of 8 inches, up to 14 inches, and rarely up to 28 inches!
The plant's tubercles are topped with papery spines, and have purple/red sections of color towards the tips of the tubercle. This plant is commonly referred to as the agave cactus, as it's spines resemble the pointed spine on an agave leaf.
Typically in its fourth year of life, leuchtenbergia produces fragrant yellow flowers from the tips of their tubercles.
Fun fact: Was named after Maximilion Eugene Joseph (1817-1852) who was the Duke of Leuchtenberg and an amatuer botanist!
